Bay of Quinte Badminton Club (BQBC)
Our practices are on Sundays at Centennial Secondary School from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm beginning in the middle of September. This time slot has been selected so that some of the more competitive players can stay longer and take part in the adult club that begins at 7:30 pm.
Our gym time at the Quinte Christian High School on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road has again been arranged, with practice sessions available on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This is intended to be an informal practice time, with BQBC members being encouraged to come out and play with their parents or friends (even if they are non-members). There is a $2.00 fee for non-BQBC members.
Individual coaching is provided at this time as well. Some players for the adult club begin to arrive at 7:00 pm and they have priority for the courts. Juniors can play to 7:30 pm if courts are available.
The motivation for the BQBC is to introduce young athletes to the sport of badminton and to develop their skills so that they can compete at district tournaments. Our challenge is to develop athletes to be able to compete at the Provincial level and beyond.
The BQBC accepts players from the age of 9 to under 19. We compete in tournaments that generally have age divisions of under 19, under 16, under 14, and under 12.
Practices are two hours long.
Practices require completion of drills and a focus on a particular skill. In spite of our goal for skill improvement, we recognize the need for our players to simply have some fun and to enjoy the company of friends and peers.
Parents are welcome to be spectators at practice. Sometimes they will be called upon to assist, but generally their assistance will be with children other than their own.
Our Season and Tournaments
The season runs from our 1st practice on Sunday September 25, 2016 to the middle of April. Members are encouraged to participate in several tournaments over the year and certainly the year-end district championships. Most tournaments are out of town, such as Whitby or Peterborough or Kingston. Some higher level “elite” tournaments require travel to other southern Ontario cities. Car-pooling is encouraged. We have an in-house club championship tournament at the end of the year as well. Parents are encouraged to support their child’s efforts by attending.
Cost and Expenses
The cost to join the Club for the season is $110.00 per athlete. A receipt is provided for income tax purposes. Entry into tournaments is voluntary but recommended as a method to improve your badminton and competitive skills. The cost of a tournament generally ranges from $30.00 upwards to $40.00. BQBC members enter several tournaments each year. An Ontario Badminton Association (OBA) Player Card is required to enter into tournaments. The $25.00 OBA player card fee is paid by the Club when the player competes in his first tournament.
