Bay of Quinte Badminton Club (BQBC)
Due to covid-19 concerns, the junior program is postponed until further notice. The balance of the website details pertains to last year.
Our practices are on Sundays at Centennial Secondary School from 5:30 pm to
7:30 pm beginning on September 08, 2019. This time slot has been selected so
that some of the more competitive players can stay longer and take part in the
adult club that begins at 7:30 pm.
Additional gym time at Quinte Christian High School on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road is available on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This “Open House” session is sponsored by the adult club, The Belleville Badminton Club. Some players use it as an informal game time. Others use it as a personalized coaching session. Players are encouraged to come out and play badminton with their parents or friends (even if they are non-members). Individual coaching can be provided at this time as well.
The motivation for the BQBC is to introduce young athletes to the sport of
badminton and to develop their skills so that they can compete at district
tournaments. Our challenge is to develop athletes to be able to compete at the
Provincial level and beyond.
The BQBC accepts players from the age of 9 to 19. We compete in tournaments
that generally have age divisions of under 19, under 16, under 14, and under
Practices require completion of drills and a focus on a particular skill. In spite of
our goal for skill improvement, we recognize the need for our players to simply
have some fun and to enjoy the company of friends and peers. Parents are welcome to be spectators at practice. Sometimes they will be called upon to assist, but generally their assistance will be with children other than their own.
Our Season and Tournaments
The season runs from our 1st practice on Sunday September 08, 2019 to the
middle of April.
Members are encouraged to participate in several tournaments over the year
and certainly the year-end district championships. Most tournaments are out of town in places such as Whitby, Peterborough or Kingston. Some higher level “elite”
tournaments require travel to other southern Ontario cities. Car-pooling is
encouraged. We have an in-house club championship tournament at the end of
the year as well. Parents are encouraged to support their child’s efforts by
attending with them.
Our first tournament this year was on November 2, 2019 with venues at Centennial Secondary and Bayside Secondary. The age divisions were similar to our other district tournaments with Under 12, U14, U17 and U19 categories. Competitors came from clubs from all around the district which includes – Kingston, Peterborough, Whitby, Ajax and points in between. Several BQBC members were medal recipients in the singles and doubles events.
Some of our members have signed up for the try-outs (Sunday December 1, 2019) for the COBA District team to compete in the Ontario Winter Games in late February 2020. We are also tuning up for the Whitby Tournament, a singles and doubles tournament on Saturday December 7, 2019.
Cost and Expenses
The cost to join the Club for the season is $90.00 per athlete. Protective eye wear (which means goggles, safety glasses or shatter-proof glasses.) is required. You will want to have your own personal racquet. The club does have some racquets if you don not have your own. Regular gym attire is appropriate.
Entry into tournaments is voluntary but participation is recommended as a method to improve your badminton and competitive skills. The cost of a tournament generally ranges from $30.00 upwards to $40.00. Some BQBC members enter several tournaments each year.
